Best Burgers in the Gayborhood

We recently finished our list of the best Mexican food dining in uptown Dallas and thought we would do the same for another Texas food of choice. Here is the list of our five favorite burger joints in Uptown and the Oak Lawn Gayborhood.

JR’s Bar and Grill

Yes, you may be in for a complete shock that JR’s Bar has a Grill and they even serve salads. If you’ve never had a burger at Jrs Bar And Grill, you are missing out. Local food guru Leah Moet had a lot to say about what they’re cooking up.

“I pride myself as being the burger expert of DFW and get asked for recommendations all the time, so I went all out. Cheeseburger with Bacon (duh), LTPO, Mayo and Mustard and a side of Crinkle Cut Fries. Every burger is made to order on a grill behind the bar so it does take a minute to get your hands on it, but trust me, it’s worth the wait!” she posted on the local foodie blog Leisurely Leah.

JR’s Bar & Grill is located at 3923 Cedar Springs Rd. Lunch is served: Mon-Sat 11AM-4PM and Sun 12PM-4PM.

Cedar Springs Tap House

Gay-friendly sports bar featuring pub fare & a range of craft brews, plus plenty of flat-screen TVs. It’s located in the former Ilume complex now called 4123 Cedar Springs. It has great burgers, flatbreads and wings. Our only complaint is the bread.

Haystack Burgers & Barley

Haystack Burgers knows burgers and if you’re in the mood for a classic, belly warming burger, or if you’re feeling a little more wild, they will supply your needs! Located nearby at 3838 Oak Lawn Ave.

Maple & Motor

Maple & Motor is critically acclaimed for their burgers from Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and you get the sort of lunch crowds that Perkins’ burger haven enjoys every day of the week — particularly on the weekends, when it can be difficult to find a parking spot and the line often stretches out the door.

These juicy burgers can be ordered either “pink” or “not pink,” and come standard Texas-style with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and mustard, though additions of bacon, jalapeños, and an oozy fried egg certainly don’t hurt.

Hunky’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers

Modern take on a retro burger stand prepares hot dogs, patty melts, shakes & housemade onion rings located in the center of the Dallas gay universe where the Crossroads bookstore used to sit in the early days of Oaklawn culture. Hunkys offers one of the good Burger experiences in the area. Especially their classic cheeseburger and their hot-dogs taste great.

The prices are fair and the atmosphere is good. We hear the vegetarian spicy black bean cheese burger is amazing. It’s open late until Midnight on the weekends and has long been one of the best places to eat on the strip!
