Dallas Observer’s “Best of Dallas” Awards Highlights

Highlighting the LGBTQ+ Scene and Beyond

The Dallas Observer’s annual “Best of Dallas” poll offers a glimpse into the city’s vibrant culture. From dining and entertainment to nightlife and services, the winners represent a diverse range of businesses. Let’s take a closer look at some of the LGBTQ+ highlights and share our perspective.

LGBTQ+ Nightlife

  • Best LGBTQ+ Bar: Barbara’s Pavilion in Oak Lawn continues to be a beloved destination for the queer community.
  • Best Drag Variety Show: The Plan B Showcase at the Round-Up Saloon offers a unique and entertaining mix of comedy, illusions, and visual gags.
  • Best Weekly Drag Show: The Rose Room at Station 4 (S4) featuring Cassie Nova and Krystal Summers is a must-visit for those seeking top-tier drag performances.

Beyond the Nightlife

  • Best Gamer Spot: Cheat Code Lounge is a hidden gem for LGBTQ+ individuals seeking a fun and inclusive gaming experience.
  • Best Vegetarian or Vegan Restaurant: Slutty Vegan offers delicious plant-based options that cater to diverse dietary preferences.

Queer-Friendly Venues It’ll Do Nightclub and Grapevine Win Big!

  • Best Dance Club: It’ll Do Nightclub is a popular choice for its high-energy dancefloor and international DJ bookings.
  • Best Comeback and Outdoor Patio: The Grapevine Bar provides a welcoming outdoor space for socializing and relaxation.

While some categories were straightforward, others raised questions. For instance, the award for “Best Electricity Company” went to TXU Energy, a company known for its high rates. Many people questioned this choice, wondering if there was a sponsorship involved or if voters simply overlooked the company’s high costs.

Best Tex-Mex in Dallas

Best Salsa in Dallas

In the food category, Ojeda’s won “Best Chips and Salsa.” While the restaurant’s salsa is indeed delicious, it’s worth noting that other local Tex-Mex spots, such as Mia’s Tex-Mex, also offer excellent chips and salsa.

For “Best Margarita,” the “Mexican Margarita Company” took the top spot. This might surprise some, as it’s often said that people don’t visit a margarita bar primarily for the food.

Corporate Wins and Local Favorites

The Dallas Observer’s “Best of Dallas” poll also featured several corporate winners, including European Wax Center and Floyd’s Barber Shop. While these chains offer convenient services, some locals may prefer to support smaller, independently owned businesses.

The “Best Indoor Music Venue” went to House of Blues, owned by Live Nation. However, many people argue that other venues, such as the Lizard Lounge (which closed during the pandemic), were superior.

A Queer Perspective

Dallas has a thriving LGBTQ+ community, and the “Best of Dallas” poll reflects the city’s diverse offerings. From nightlife venues to dining options, there’s something for everyone. While the poll highlights some of the city’s best-loved establishments, it’s important to remember that there are many other fantastic businesses that deserve recognition as well.
