Considering Zac Efron is not yet quite twenty years old he has already had a remarkable career, not only on TV but also appearing in music videos, musical shows and as a recording artist. If you add to all that his good looks you can clearly see that what we have here is a heart-throb in the making. Not that he isn’t one already. The world has a fascination with the boyish, twinkish looks of Zac Efron.

Zac was born Zachary David Alexander Efron, on October 18th 1987 in San Luis Obispo, California and is of Jewish descent. He started his stage and singing career early, aged 11, when he was picked to appear for 90 performances in the musical ‘Gypsy’. After this he played roles in ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Little shop of horrors’, ‘The music man’ and ‘Mame’, all pretty well known shows requiring big performances and a high level of technical ability.

Zac first started to get really noticed when he began appearing on TV however, reaching a nationwide and international audience of adoring girls and boys alike. His earliest TV roles were in ‘Firefly’, ‘ER’ and ‘The Guardian’, but he is probably best known for his role in ‘Summerland’ where he played Cameron Bale, the boy whose father used to beat him. So he is no stranger to tough and gritty parts as well as light musical comedy. In fact he won a Young Artist Award (best performance in a TV movie) for his role in ‘Summerland’.

His list of achievements and appearances goes on but it was his appearance in the 2006 Disney Channel original movie ‘High School Musical’ which you could say first kick started his more mainstream musical career. A career which almost got off to a rocky start: his singing voice was brought into question when it was revealed that Andrew Steeley, a Canadian singer/performer, sang the higher notes in Zac’s role and their two voices were combined to create the final performance. The reason for this was that the part Zac was singing was written for a Tenor and he has a lower voice, a Baritone, and the higher notes were out of his range.

But this didn’t stop him from going on to bring out two chart songs in February 2006: ‘Get’cha Head in the Game’ and ‘Breaking Free’, the second one being a duet with Vanessa Hudgens taken from ‘High School Musical’. This duet held the record for the fastest climber on the Billboard Charts going from number 86 to number 4 in two weeks. A clear indication that this talented boy was making himself popular with the American public and very quickly too.

And more recently? What’s new from Zac? Well, at the end of 2006 he could be found in Canada filming a new movie version of the old John Walters classic, cult musical comedy ‘Hairspray’. When this movie is released you’ll be able to see him playing along side stars like John Travolta, Queen Latifah and Amanda Bynes. And as if that wasn’t a challenge enough for any young actor he will also be performing all his own numbers.

Zac has 19 TV and movie credits under his belt, he has sung on three albums and five singles and performed in live theatre. Not bad for the teenage son of an electrician.
