Houston Area STD and HIV testing

If you are sexually active, and suspect that you may have contracted a sexually transmitted disease, it can be distressing– but you should not feel embarrassed for seeking help. It is not a problem that will go away on its own, and it shouldn’t be ignored or postponed. Failure to treat STDs in a timely manner can have very serious consequences for your health. Fortunately, there are various resources available in your area. Many Houston clinics perform testing for the most common STDs including gonorrhea, hepatitis, syphilis, HIV, HPV and others.

The Montrose Counseling Center, located on the second floor at 401 Branard Street in Houston, serves the Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery areas and offers confidential and anonymous HIV testing as well as counseling and education programs. The Montrose Clinic at 215 Westheimer Road also serves the Montrose area.

Motherland serves Northeast Houston and is located at 4208 Ella Boulevard, Suite D in Houston. This organization offers anonymous HIV testing, counseling and prevention advice.

Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast operates multiple locations and offers anonymous HIV testing as well as diagnosis and treatment of common STDs. There are four of the centers in Houston. Houston Urgent Care Centers are walk-in clinics that do not require an appointment. They provide confidential testing and compassionate treatment for common STDs as well as other medical issues. They operate two locations in the city. One is at 1826 Wirt Road; the other is at 16125 Cairnway, Suite 100.

The University of Texas Health Science Center, located at 6655 Travis, Suite 980, offers both testing and treatment of HIV and AIDS in addition to general counseling and HIV prevention education.

The University of Texas Treatment Research Clinic, located at 1300 Moursund, Suite 115, serves the central area of the city and provides confidential HIV testing, case management, counseling and treatment information.

Before you arrive for your test appointment, it may help to be aware of what procedures to expect. A standard HIV test can be performed with a blood sample, a urine sample or a throat swab. Tests for other STDs may require a swab of the genital area. Female patients should bathe normally but refrain from using any creams, medications, douche solutions or scented products on the day of the scheduled test.

If your HIV test returns a negative result, you may be encouraged to retest in several months to be sure that this is consistent. In that time period, be sure to take steps to prevent newly exposing yourself or anyone else to the virus.

If you test positive for another type of STD, such as gonorrhea or HPV, you may be able to obtain treatment at the same clinic. Otherwise, you will need to make an appointment with a doctor. Some STDs are easily cured, and others are very treatable; so don’t avoid pursuing medical help. The peace of mind is worth the effort.
